Accident on Royal Hospital Cycle Path

Hi all, I am new to the site but have been cycling for many years.

Last week I had a bad accident on the royal hospital cycle path. It happened on the short stretch between the rear car parks and crow lane. This section has been mentioned on the site before for being in poor condition (although it was only recently build). Let me explain what happened - it was after dark around 8pm and there is no lighting at all on this part of the path. Roughly half way down this path the contractor who build it (when building the new houses there) had placed a large rock as a bollard to stop cars driving down the path, it wasn't needed because there is a gate at the entrance to the car park which is locked and also has a bollard. This rock is not painted white, or marked with florescent stickers, bare in mind this path is totally unlit. I have 2 frount light on my bike which provide a decent amount of light, I did not however see the rock, which I hit at speed and flew over the handlebars landing face down.

I have broken a bone in my elbow, sprained my wrist and damaged the bike forks and frount derailleur. I've contacted a specialist cycle accident claims company to seek compensation for my injury and bike damage. A unmarked bollard in the middle of an unlit cycle path is absolute lunacy! Watch out if you take this route. Who should I contact about getting this stupid bollard removed?

Thanks for reading.

Accident

First of all I am sorry to hear of your accident. I will forward your post on to Sally at the Royal Hospital who deals with cycling matters and also to Mark Shewring at Chesterfield Borough Council. CBC administered the work on this path.

I am seeing both of them at the Cyclists Forum tomorrow so will mention your incident then. Would you mind sending me your e mail address so that I can contact you direct - mine is secretary@chesterfieldcc.org.uk?

Thankyou.

I will email you my details.

Bollards!

When you say bollard I assume you mean the random rock that has been placed in the middle of the track where the road turns into the housing developement.

I assume it has been placed there to stop cars driving onto the new bit of track and blocking the whole route, I don't think it is an official bollard. Cars used to park there on a regular basis and you had to dismount to get past. I know the rock has been there for a few months but had noticed it had been moved to one side recently. What really needs to be there is a proper post with reflectors on it. I don't think the hospital own the track, as I have looked into owner of the track in the past. The hospital own the field and as part of their planning permission to upgrade/extend the car parks they were required to upgrade the track. Can't tell you anymore.

Hope you make a speedy recovery.

They're Back

Cycled past along the Plover Hill track last night and noticed the rock 'bollard' is back.
