VELO BELLE is a new project dedicated to promoting cycling amongst women by removing some commonly-harboured preconceptions. Created in partnership with Cyclemagic, the project aims to prove that cycling is more than just practical and healthy – it can also be stylish and something that fits seamlessly into the average woman’s everyday life.
An important part of this on-going project will take place on March 16th 2010 – a festival of cycling in Queens Hall and surrounding grounds at the University of Leicester. The event will illustrate the objectives of the project at large and there will be a range of activities for the public to engage in. Exhibits include a cycle try-out area with odd and unusual bikes, free bicycle
maintenance, stalls and representatives from leading cycle clothing manufacturers, a cycle history display and a recycled art workshop.
Lycra is not compulsory – this is one of the key themes of the VELO BELLE event on March 16th. There are fantastic health benefits to cycling, but to make the most of these we do not have to style ourselves as elite sportswomen (although that’d be great too!). Cycling is an incredibly diverse activity, and there are as many styles and types of riding as there are women in the world – it is what you make it. Use your bike to make a quick trip to the shop or go on 80 mile rides each weekend; however you want to incorporate cycling into your life, VELO BELLE can show you how.
The festival of cycling event will incorporate many areas that will be of interest to both seasoned riders and those who have never ridden before in their life. As well as the opportunity to try out some very unusual bikes, there will also be information on learning to ride or improving skills from registered Bikeability trainers. There will be details on Cyclemagic’s maintenance courses if you’d like to learn how to take care of your ride, and free maintenance offered on-site by Dr Bike.
Cycle history will be covered by Cyclemagic’s resident historian, who will be explaining what part the bicycle played in the emancipation of women. For those wishing to put their feet up there will be free chauffeured rickshaw rides to take advantage of, and Creative Problem Solvers will be offering recycled accessory and art making workshops throughout the day. There will also be a section promoting the health benefits of cycling.
There will be a number of opportunities to discover different types of cycle - everything from vintage shoppers and dutch bikes to mountain and racing bikes. If you’re not sure what type of bike would suit your lifestyle best, or if you’d just like the chance to look around at some beautiful machines by a number of dirrerent makers, VELO BELLE can help.
Many stalls at the event will show how the latest innovations in accessories and safety gear mean that style need not be compromised on the bike. Quite the opposite – the cycle itself can be an accessory more indispensible than any other. Exhibits from leading cycle clothing manufacturers will help show just how much cycle-specific clothing has changed in recent years.
