Resources

Here we aim to gather together a range of resources to help make your cycling safer, easier and more enjoyable - whether cycling around Chesterfield or further afield.

If there is any useful information that you would like to see included in this section, please contact the Secretary with your suggestions.

Facilities

Cycle Parking: There are currently two locker sites, and dozens of cycle stands situated around Chesterfield. A map of locations is available here.

Cycle lockers are situated at the coach station and at the St Mary's Gate end of Vicar Lane. Keys are available from the Tourist Information Centre. Download a copy of Chesterfield Borough Councils information leaflet here.

Cycle to Work Scheme

A tax incentive provided by the government, which allows employees to buy a new bike and accessories with a saving of around 40-50%. Our online fact sheet is available here.

Bike Buddy

The Campaign has launched its 'Bike Buddy' scheme to help new or retuning riders. Several Campaign members have indicated their willingness to accompany less confident riders on their normal cycle journeys or leisure rides. We have a co-ordinator who can be contacted here.

Bicycle User Groups

Do you work for, or are a larger employer in Chesterfield? Have you considered setting up a Bicycle Users Group to raise awareness of cycling issues. If your workplace has, or is formulating, a Travel Plan a BUG can influence the measures that are put in place. For more ideas look at www.cyclefriendlyemployers.org.uk.

Public Transport

Tips and advice on travelling further afield with your bike.

Cycle Training

The new national standard cycle training branded 'Bikeability' is available locally via two local instructors (both members of the campaign). They offer Levels 1, 2 and 3 training. Details can be found here.

Derbyshire County Council provides Cycle Training (previously called Cycle Proficiency) at some schools in Chesterfield using volunteer trainers. If you would be interested in becoming a volunteer instructor contact the Campaign secretary. The secretary and other members are already instructors and can explain what is involved.

Ride Ideas

The Campaign publishes a leaflet guiding around a triangular ride along the Hipper Valley and Holmebrook Valley routes. Copies are available from the Tourist Information Centre or by download here. We also run a programme of short family rides during the summer. See the 'Events' section in the menu.

Derbyshire County Council publish a suggested ride along the same route but extended to Linacre Woods, their leaflet is here.

Spire Cycling Club cater for road cyclists in Chesterfield and organise rides on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. They also meet at their clubroom  - Walton Village Centre on a Monday evening. Contact Dave Scrivenor for more details tel 01246 455525.

Bike Maintenance

The Campaign occasionally run Dr Bike sessions, look on the events page. We have a short page with maintenance tips and diagrams here. If you require professional servicing for your bike there are two places in Chesterfield - J E James and Halfords. Les Roper, who runs a stall on the market in Chesterfield carries some spares and can repair and build wheels. He is at the Low Pavement end of the main market on Fridays and Mondays and at the top of the main market on Saturdays
