New Tesco Site

The new Tesco store (replacing the store opposite) opened late in 2009, a new stadium for Chesterfield Football Club opened in summer 2010. Various other smaller businesses have also opened. A new hotel called the Casa Hotel has been built opposite the Tesco store.

The Campaign was sent a copy of the plans for our comment. This development has no cycle infrastucture shown on the plans except for the required number of 'Sheffield Stands' for cycle parking. In our reply to this application we pointed out the very 'car-centric' design of this development.

Despite assurances to the contrary the Campaign has had to be very alert to get cycle infrastructure included - crossings put in for pedestrians only when they should have been Toucans, cycle access ramps not being built etc. No 'through' cycle route. Cycle access from Whittington Moor is still poor. Generally the Campaign believes the cycle provision to be very poor for such a major development.

With the help of DCC Highways Officers we have been able to push for many small improvements, repositioned dropped kerbs, an additional shared path to create an almost through route! A widened path by the Lockoford Lane Toucan has also been provided.

The Campaign believes this is an example of how NOT to do a new development!

We feel we have got as far as we can with this site. We acknowledge the help of the DCC Highways dept in persuading the developers to include additional infrastructure which could have been included as planning conditions.

DCC have built a new shared path from Lockoford Lane to Hazlehurst Avenue (Stonegravels Way) to provide an additional through route from the town centre.
