Bikes on Buses

There are no buses we are aware of that will carry a non-folded bicycle from Chesterfield. Even folding bikes are at the discretion of the driver although in 2009 Stagecoach issued a leaflet saying folding bikes were welcome on their services BUT still at the drivers discretion! So no different to before.

The Campaign would like to see a bike carrying bus running from Chesterfield to Matlock and Wirksworth. This would connect to the County Council offices and the triangular cycle trail through the Peak District.

Another possible service would be buses carrying bikes up Hady Hill to the hospital. This would allow easier cycle commuting from the town centre.

The Campaign is exploring both these possibilities with local bus companies.

In Sheffield the situation is a little less bleak, there are 4 bus routes that carry bikes.

  • Service 61 & 62 Hillsborough to Bradfield - 7 days a week, Information - Stagecoach Sheffield 0114 247 0777
  • Service 64 Hillsborough to Rivelin Valley - Monday to Saturday, Information - Stagecoach Sheffield 0114 247 0777
  • Service 150 Sheffield to Rother Valley Country Park and Sherwood Forest, Summer Sundays and Bank Holidays only, Information - Powells 01709 702220
  • Service 284 Sheffield to Ringinglow and Hathersage - Summer Sundays, Information - Sheffield Community Transport 0114 276 6148

All these services advertise that they will carry two adult bikes inside the bus if there is space available. Drivers always have the right to refuse a bicycle especially if it is very dirty.

The fare is 20p per bike.

Folding bikes covered in a bag may be taken on all Sheffield buses.

Sheffield Trams

Folding bikes in a bag are carried at the discretion of the conductor. Non folding bikes are not carried - except - once a month on the last Sunday Sheffield Cycle Campaign organise a Bicycle Special from Cathedral tram stop to either Waterthorpe for Rother Valley Country park or Middlewood for Wharnecliff Woods. Departing at 10.00am and returning at 3.00pm. Spaces need to be booked in advance. Download their leaflet here. This is also the are of a new route to be built by Sustrans as part of their Connect2 project.
