Clay Cross

Hi folks,

Has anyone done work on getting this attached in to the 5 pits?

Clay Cross

It's a great idea but I'm not familiar with Clay Cross so I've been looking on the OS map and Google Earth to see how such a route might go.  Have you had any thoughts on this?

Presumably a predominantly off-road route would be the best, so you would be looking at upgrading existing footpaths if you could get the landowners to agree.  It looks quite hilly to the east of Clay Cross and there is also the issue of needing to get over the railway line.

At first glance, the best crossing point would probably be here ...

... because it looks like a track, rather than needing to share a road bridge with cars.  Then you could follow the footpath and track east to Hallgate Lane in Pilsley, over the road to Back Lane, then along the bridlepath labelled Dark Lane.

From Google Earth, it looks like there are a few paths that could take a cyclist south through Clay Cross from the development site to this track.  I imagine they are mostly footpaths at the moment but perhaps could be upgraded?

As I said, I'm not familiar with Clay Cross, so this suggestion might be completely unrealistic on the ground, but what do you think?

Is there anyone in the Campaign who lives near this area who could give a better assessment?

I was thinking more of here:

and then along the railway to here:

then across station road with a toucan and up the old railway line (along the side of the wood) to the end of the Five Pits Trail branch:

I reckon that looks like a good link, and there may be opportunity for a small track across the intervening railway-side land.

What do you think?

We have to get in now I'd suggest, because the Biwaters site developers may build a house across the end of the bridge or something...

What do you think?  Is it worth talking to NEDDC about the plans, and if they can influence the developer?  Can anyone shed light on the state of the bridge and its environs?

Clay Cross to Five Pits

I think that route looks brilliant - I hadn't noticed the old railway line there.

A project like this will probably need the cooperation of DCC too, because I think the old railway line would fall under the remit of the Greenways people.

What a shame there is a small break in the old railway route (by the houses on Deincourt Crescent) near where it crosses Chesterfield Road in North Wingfield.

The break

The old railway path there comes out on to Deincourt Crescent, and to be a fully safe route it'd require a short by-the-side-of-the-road or wider shared path for the short hop (less than 100m) to the Five Pits access.
