Chesterfield Cycle Campaign promotes cycle use in Chesterfield for both leisure and utility journeys.  By campaigning for a comprehensive network, we aim to improve conditions for cyclists so that cycling becomes a safer and more attractive option than car travel for local journeys.

TPT Baton Relay, Thursday 17th June (Photos now in Image Gallery)

This month sees the twenty-first anniversary of the Trans Pennine Trail's inaugural ride which publically launched the route in 1989.

To celebrate, baton relays are being organised from the five end-points of the Trail at Chesterfield, Southport, Leeds, York and Hornsea. The batons will arrive in Barnsley, the midpoint of the Trail, by Saturday 19th June.  Barnsley will then arrange for all the batons to travel from Stairfoot for the final leg to the Football Ground where a 'Celebration Festival' will take place on Sunday 20th.

The Chesterfield leg of the relay will start from the Town Hall at 9.00 am on Thursday 17th June.  The baton is being sent on its way by the Mayor, Councillor Keith Morgan, and carried onwards to Killamarsh by a variety of schools and local community groups.

If you'd like to show your support and watch the baton on its way, the approximate timetable is below:

Chesterfield Canal Trust Emergency Appeal for £5,500

Site of new Staveley Canal BasinChesterfield cyclists are lucky to have the Chesterfield Canal on their doorstep, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Chesterfield Canal Trust and its partners.

The next major development is a new Staveley Basin which is being built as the result of a recent award of £500,000 from the East Midlands Development Agency.  The Trust is also seeking to eventually raise around £300,000 to build a new lock at Staveley, right next to the Basin.

However, initially the Trust is applying to funders for the £50,000 required to lay the base pad of the lock.  It will be cheaper to do this as part of the Basin contract than if it has to be let as a separate contract.  Once the base is laid, the Trust's Work Party will build the lock itself.

With this in mind, the Trust needs to raise £5,500 as soon as possible, as its contribution to the cost of the base pad.  Any donation that you can make will be welcome.  Please send it to the Chesterfield Canal Trust's Treasurer at 47, Whitecotes Park, Walton, Chesterfield, S40 3RT.

For more information about Chesterfield Canal Trust and its work, visit the website at www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk.

Canal Work at Staveley

View from the bottom of Constitution Hill towards Mill Green bridgeFurther work on restoring the Chesterfield Canal has started at Staveley, on the section between Mill Green and the forthcoming Staveley Canal Basin.  During the works, the Trans Pennine Trail is taking a very minor diversion but cyclists should be aware that the path quality is currently very poor and may not be suitable for all bicycles.
